Back then, the sensor was a purely passive pixel array: the analog signal had to be pulled off-chip, travel along PCB traces measured in centimeters, pass through the PGA inside a separate AFE chip, and finally reach an off-board ADC. Long traces, high impedance, plenty of interference — the whole chain’s input-referred noise ran to dozens of electrons. If you didn’t push the signal up in the analog domain first, the downstream ADC’s quantization noise and the circuit’s floor noise would genuinely eat the micro-dynamics of weak signals; the collapse in SNR was visible to the naked eye. Under that system (or indeed the film era’s constrained, expensive practice of pushing film and its fine-grain late-stage gain), “analog gain up front is more faithful” was, in fact, true.

But today’s mainstream mirrorless sensors are no longer like that. They are all column-parallel on-chip ADC architectures, and many go straight to pixel-level or column-level single-slope ADCs. In other words, after the pixel source follower, the signal travels a few micrometers of metal trace straight into a comparator — the physical length of the entire analog chain has been compressed to the limit, and the magnitude of noise it introduces is simply not in the same league as before. Good sensors already achieve read noise in the single digits of electrons, even sub-electron levels. Against that backdrop, fretting over how much analog gain suppresses downstream noise is, practically speaking, rather pointless — because there is hardly any downstream noise left worth suppressing.

Multi-native ISO is not gain at all

This point needs to be made very concrete: multi-native ISO is not continuously variable analog gain; it is dual (or even multiple) conversion gain. A switch inside the pixel toggles the floating diffusion node capacitance between high and low, directly changing the charge-to-voltage conversion factor. When you flip it, read noise drops off a cliff while the well capacity shrinks — that alone is the reason the measured SNR curve shows a step. Outside that switch point, the sensor’s read-noise floor is locked; every intermediate ISO stop is a purely digital multiplication done on that fixed floor. Measurements show that at the same native ISO, the noise character of RAW files is almost identical — precisely because no analog gain is continuously acting inside the signal chain.

Meanwhile, today’s AFE is no longer a simple linear amplifier: it has evolved into a signal-conditioning and bias-management module. What it chiefly does is CDS to cancel reset noise, black-level calibration, and even some on-chip digital-domain noise shaping. The one thing it no longer does is old-school continuous voltage amplification. Calling this module an “analog front end” is mostly historical inertia — its core function changed long ago.

The ISP muddies the waters further

The ISP muddies the waters further. Modern ISPs are extremely good at denoising weak signals and compensating fixed-pattern noise in the RAW domain. Even if a little gain is skipped in the analog domain and the ADC output occupies only a few low-order bits, as long as you don’t fall below the quantization floor, the ISP’s noise model can smooth over that difference entirely. What you finally see as grain is almost purely photon shot noise; the shadow of read noise has been pushed down into the background.

Two boundaries still stand

Of course, two boundaries remain clear — the exceptions are these:

Extreme low light: signals of only two or three electrons. In that narrow window where read noise begins to dominate relatively, the high-gain DCG mode still offers a visible advantage — but only by about one stop; above that it’s all digital.

Overexposed regions: this is about well-capacity allocation strategy. Low analog gain means preserving highlights; high analog gain means preserving SNR at the cost of well capacity. In that situation the chosen ISO is really a hardware-level repositioning of dynamic range — it has nothing to do with “fidelity.”

Conclusion

Setting those two special cases aside, in everyday shooting, deliberately dropping ISO to underexpose so as to protect highlights and then lifting it three to five stops in post yields a difference from shooting straight at high ISO in-camera that falls within engineering tolerances. “Analog gain is more faithful” is no longer always true.

Deleted That ‘Orphaned’ Database and Everything Broke — A camsvc Rescue Story

So here’s the deal. The
camsvc
(Capability Access Manager Service)
SQLite
database on my machine had let its WAL log files balloon to over 40 GB in total — for reasons best known to itself — and my disk was screaming. Figured I’d just torch a few database files to claw some space back. Did the obvious thing:

takeown /f "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager" /r /d y
icacls "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\CapabilityAccessManager" /grant administrators:F /t

Then I nuked every file in that directory. Windows won’t even let you delete without taking ownership first, so once you’ve jumped through that hoop… might as well go all the way, right?

Reality had other plans.

camsvc
uses
SQLite
to store two kinds of data:

CapabilityAccessManager.db
— which apps have requested which system capabilities (camera, microphone, location, Wi-Fi…)

CapabilityConsentStorage.db
— whether the user granted or denied each capability

SQLite
enables WAL (Write-Ahead Log) mode by default. Normally the log gets checkpointed (merged back into the main database) once it reaches a certain size. But if checkpointing gets stuck for some reason, that
-wal
file grows unchecked. That’s what happened to me — a single log file eating 30+ GB.

A friend told me afterwards that his same directory only took up 795 MB. So not everyone gets the bloat, but if you do, start by checking the WAL file size.

CapabilityAccessManager.db-shm ← deleted
CapabilityConsentStorage.db ← deleted
CapabilityConsentStorage.db-wal ← deleted
CapabilityConsentStorage.db-shm ← deleted

I thought these were just cache files the system would recreate automatically. I underestimated how much Windows’ architecture has evolved — this database touches far more services than I imagined.

graph TB

WiFi -->|queries capability authorization| camsvc

With the databases gone, the entire chain snapped cleanly:

camsvc itself couldn’t start — database files missing, the service crashes during initialization

lfsvc (geolocation), sensor service, Wi-Fi components couldn’t get capability grants — when they ask
camsvc
, it returns empty/error, so they just give up

Settings app crashes on open —
systemsettings.exe
needs to enumerate all capability authorization states for the Privacy page;
camsvc
returns an exception, Settings crashes without even showing an error

Wi-Fi, camera, location sensors naturally stopped working

Rookie move, obviously. Felt smart for about five minutes.

Yes yes, ‘have you tried turning it off and on again’. But the reboot wasn’t some magic bullet — I’d done all the real repair work beforehand. The reboot just gave everything room to fall into place in the right order.

Key repairs I did before rebooting:

Action

Why it matters

takeown
+
icacls
to fix permissions

★★★ Without write permission on the directory,
camsvc
can’t create new databases — nothing else matters

regsvr32
to re-register
CapabilityAccessManager.dll

★★★
COM
registration may have been corrupted or lost

Set
camsvc
to auto-start

★★☆ Ensures correct startup order

Delete leftover
.db-wal
, rename old DB to
.bak

★★☆ Prevents
SQLite
from reading corrupted old data

Reset
UWP
packages

★☆☆ Auxiliary fix for
Settings
registration state

After reboot, these fixes actually took effect:

Correct startup order — camsvc starts first, dependent services follow without conflict

Database auto-recreation — camsvc detects missing databases on startup, creates new ones with default authorization states

COM components reloaded — registry configurations are re-read

Driver re-initialization — Wi-Fi adapter, camera, and sensor drivers go through their init sequence again

Settings starts clean — this time it can read capability authorization data without crashing

Reboot is still an important part of the fix. Do all the necessary repairs first, then reboot to let them take effect in the correct startup order. Rebooting then fixing is like shuffling a deck before sorting it — wasted effort.

Multi-model cross-validation is genuinely useful. Different models — or better yet, different model families — often suggest completely different angles of attack. Having ChatGPT and Gemini tag-team the problem was like getting a real specialist panel together. Would recommend.

Windows’ internal coupling is nightmare fuel.
camsvc
→
lfsvc
→
RuntimeBroker
→
Settings
→
drivers
— all deeply tangled. In 2026, deleting one database can take out your Wi-Fi. Your. Wi-Fi.

According to reports, Microsoft released a fix
KB5095093
on 2026/06/23:

‘Optimizing CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal disk usage logic to stop unlimited file growth.’

It specifically addresses the
camsvc
WAL infinite-growth bug. Another patch,
KB5101650
, is also rumoured to help. Check if you have either:

Start-Process ms-settings:windowsupdate

and install from Optional Updates (although neither showed up in my available updates).

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Official United Nations Text)

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, therefore,

The General Assembly,

Proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.
